Makryna Mieczysławska, the alleged superior of a Basilian convent in Minsk, arrived in Paris in September 1845 after fleeing Russian persecution for resisting conversion to Orthodoxy and remaining faithful to the Catholic Church. In the French capital, she won the hearts of members of the Polish émigré community. Her story was widely reported in numerous European periodicals, and Mieczysławska herself soon travelled to Rome with Father Aleksander Jełowicki to convey to Pope Gregory XVI information about the suffering of the Uniate faithful and the Polish nation. Her testimonies were published in translations into French, German, English, and Italian, among other languages. Members of the Polish émigré community viewed the nun as the embodiment of suffering Poland, mercilessly wounded by the spear of a Russian legionnaire. Mieczysławska's influence on Polish Romantic poets was immense. In this book, the author challenges this compelling image, revealing the mechanisms behind the mystification.
